A tragic case that shook Detroit has taken another turn, leaving more questions than answers.
Jarvis Butts, the man who pleaded guilty to the murder of 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris, has died in prison just weeks after receiving his sentence. According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, his death is being reported as a suicide.
Butts, 43, was sentenced on March 12, 2026, to 35 to 60 years in prison for second-degree murder, along with additional concurrent sentences for multiple sexual assault cases involving young victims.
Na’Ziyah Harris, a 13-year-old Detroit student, was reported missing in January 2024 after last being seen getting off a school bus. Investigators later connected her disappearance to Butts, who ultimately pleaded guilty to her murder.
Despite his confession, one of the most heartbreaking aspects of this case remains unresolved — Na’Ziyah’s body has still not been found.
As part of his plea agreement, Butts was required to provide information about the location of her body in hopes of giving her family some form of closure. However, with his death, the possibility of ever recovering her remains now feels even more uncertain.
This case has sparked outrage and deep sorrow across the community, not only because of the brutality of the crime, but because of the unanswered questions that remain.
While justice may have been partially served through his conviction, many are left wondering if true justice can ever be achieved without closure for Na’Ziyah’s family.
At the center of it all is a young girl whose life was cut short — and a family still waiting for answers.
